Is Osteotomy Mandatory for a Hump Nose?

Hello~!

Your beauty universe! This is Weverse Plastic Surgery :) ❤

We have prepared the third Q&A session with Dr. Shim Jung-hwan! ❤

Today's topic is about the 'hump nose'.

Is osteotomy mandatory for a hump nose?

A: No, it is not.

Osteotomy may only be necessary if the hump is severe.

A dorsal hump consists of a bony part and a cartilaginous part.

The cartilage part is excised, and the bone part is shaved down if it is mild, or requires an osteotomy if it is severe.

If a large amount of the upper bone is shaved down, it creates an open roof, meaning the roof of the nose is left open.

In such cases, a lateral osteotomy is required to close the roof.

Additionally, the nasal airway may become narrow, making breathing uncomfortable, so performing a spreader graft using cartilage

to prevent the airway from narrowing may also be necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is osteotomy essential for hump nose surgery?

No. Osteotomy is only necessary for severe humps. A hump nose is composed of bone and cartilage, and if the symptoms are not severe, improvement can be achieved by simply shaving down the bone.

How are the cartilage and bone parts of a hump nose surgically treated?

The cartilage part is trimmed, and the bone part is either shaved down or osteotomized depending on its condition. Mild bony humps are corrected by gently shaving them down, but if the protrusion is severe, osteotomy is required.

What is an open roof that occurs after hump nose surgery?

It refers to a state where the roof of the nose is open due to excessive removal of the upper nasal bones. It occurs when a severe hump requires significant bone removal, and to resolve this, additional lateral osteotomy is needed to close the open roof.

Why is spreader graft necessary during hump nose surgery?

It is necessary to prevent the nasal airway from narrowing after surgery, which can make breathing uncomfortable. Performing a spreader graft with cartilage helps maintain the internal respiratory passage of the nose, preventing it from narrowing.
