Uber Plastic Surgery Truth or Lie: Can I Drink and Smoke After Plastic Surgery?

Hello. This is Uber Plastic Surgery! :)
Today's Truth or Lie topic is
all about drinking and smoking after plastic surgery!
There are clear reasons why you should
refrain from drinking or smoking after plastic surgery!
Today, in our Truth or Lie segment with
Dr. Seo Seung-jo of Uber Plastic Surgery, we will discuss this in detail~

There are various opinions regarding drinking after plastic surgery.
However, in conclusion, it is best to avoid
drinking alcohol as much as possible after surgery!

The reason is that alcohol can lower our immunity
and decrease our recovery ability after surgery.
In the case of a very small amount of alcohol,
it might help with blood circulation
(here, a small amount means a really small amount, about one glass),
but since it is hard to control yourself once you start drinking,
it is recommended to abstain from alcohol for about a month after surgery if possible.

Unlike alcohol, there are no differing opinions when it comes to smoking.
It is unconditionally bad.

When you smoke, the peripheral blood vessels in our body constrict.
The constriction of peripheral blood vessels means
that the blood supply is reduced,
and while the reduced supply is a problem,
if the supplied blood does not drain out,
there will be much more swelling in the surgical area, right?

Taking rhinoplasty as an example, when performing nose surgery,
an incision is made on the columella.
Then, the most vulnerable area for blood circulation would be the columella, right?
If you smoke in this situation and constrict the peripheral blood vessels,
the blood supply drops, and even if the supply comes in,
just like a clogged drain, the part where the blood should
drain out becomes blocked.
In such cases, the surgical area turns purple,
and skin necrosis can occur.

In most primary surgeries, this is extremely rare,
but if you had revision surgery or significantly lengthened a very short nose,
that is, in the case of a major surgery, smoking is really bad.

Many people ask if nicotine gum, patches, or e-cigarettes are okay
instead of regular cigarettes. So I looked it up myself!
According to a journal from the most famous medical society in the US,
there is no significant difference between smoking and using alternatives
after plastic surgery.
The conclusion is that both smoking and using alternatives are not good.

For both drinking and smoking after plastic surgery,
it is best to hold off for at least a month.

You must remember that this one-month period is the minimum time
to prevent major inflammation, necrosis, etc.,
and it is not a period completely unrelated to recovery.
Since it takes about 6 months for the surgical results to be fully finalized,
there is a clear difference between tissues with abundant blood circulation
and those without during that period, so please keep this in mind
and refrain from drinking or smoking as much as possible.

Because they won't be able to smoke after surgery,
some people keep smoking right up until they come in for surgery.
That is actually the worst thing you can do.
Rather, smoking before surgery causes the blood vessels to constrict,
meaning the surgery is performed with the peripheral blood vessels already blocked.
Since this itself can greatly affect the postoperative results,
we recommend quitting smoking 1 to 2 weeks before surgery.

Today, we had our Truth or Lie segment
with Dr. Seo Seung-jo of Uber Plastic Surgery~
If you are planning to have plastic surgery,
we highly recommend quitting smoking even before the surgery if possible!
It would be even better if you could quit smoking completely at this opportunity, right? ^^
