What functional problems can occur with a deviated nose?

As mentioned earlier, just because the outside is crooked doesn't mean the inside is, so the external deviation itself doesn't necessarily cause functional problems.

However, if the inside of the nose is deviated, functional issues can arise.

➰If you have a deviated septum, the nasal cavity narrows in the direction of the deviation, making it difficult to breathe.

In this case, surgery to straighten the septum can alleviate the narrowing of the nasal cavity.

Another condition that causes functional problems is rhinitis.

➰Rhinitis is a condition where the nasal mucosa swells and produces a runny nose due to internal medical factors such as seasonal or allergic triggers,

resulting in nasal congestion.

Surgery cannot completely resolve these internal medical factors.

However, there is a structure called the inferior turbinate, which is a bump-like protrusion of the mucosa on both walls when looking inside the nostrils from below.

Using a device called a coblator, we can shrink this mucosa and push the bone inside the inferior turbinate outward.

This structurally expands the space between the septum and the inferior turbinate, widening the airway.

➰If the internal nasal valve itself is narrow, to widen the space between the septum and the upper lateral cartilage,

a spreader graft can be placed here to widen the internal nasal valve.
