Does lateral and lower canthoplasty always close back up over time?

​

​

A: Surgical methods vary depending on the surgeon, but rather than saying it closes back up, it is more accurate to think of it as reverting slightly.

Lateral and lower canthoplasty is performed by anchoring and pulling the lower eyelid to firm tissues (such as the capsulopalpebral fascia, periosteum, etc.)

and extending the remaining skin and mucosal areas.

​

First, the surgery must be performed delicately so that the extended skin or mucosal areas do not actually fuse back together.

​

Second, even if these areas do not fuse, the lower eyelid naturally moves as you blink,

so you can expect it to settle into a position that is slightly looser than the initial fixation.

Taking this into account, we intentionally overcorrect during the initial surgery. Because it reverts slightly over time, many people mistakenly think it has closed back up.

Therefore, I would like to say that a certain degree of reversion is normal, but actual tissue fusion is something that should be avoided.
