Is ptosis correction essential when getting double eyelid surgery?

A: No, it is not.

​

Double eyelid surgery is a procedure that creates a crease by folding the skin of the upper eyelid,

while ptosis correction is a surgery that corrects the strength of the eye-opening muscles.

Ptosis correction becomes necessary when creating a crease if the eye-opening strength is weak.

Simply put, you can think of ptosis correction as being necessary when less of your iris is visible,

but one concept to keep in mind here is pseudoptosis.

​

Ptosis means that the eye-opening strength is weak, and when the power of the eye-opening muscle is actually reduced, it is called true ptosis.

Pseudoptosis is when the eye-opening strength is good, but because there is no double eyelid crease, the skin of the upper eyelid covers a large portion of the iris.

In such cases, simply creating a double eyelid to address the covering skin will allow the iris to be well-exposed, resulting in clear and defined eyes.
