The bulbous nose that Koreans typically refer to is slightly different from the medical definition of a bulbous nose.

Medically, it is characterized by a thick nasal tip, so someone with a thick nasal tip has a bulbous nose,

but the standards for a bulbous nose vary widely.

Q: To what extent does a bulbous nose require surgery?

If the height is raised too much to correct the bulbous nose, it can become excessively large, so

it is important to carefully distinguish the nose type and perform the surgery using the appropriate method.

Q: Why is bulbous nose surgery difficult?

Dr. Seo Seung-jo:

An easy bulbous nose is one where the tip and alar are indistinguishable—typically someone with a lot of fat and large cartilage.

Patients with thick skin are the difficult cases to operate on.

In these cases, if you raise it a lot, a low

and thick nose can just become a large and thick nose. (It gets bigger)

A low and spread-out nose is easy.

For this case, we can just raise the height while performing an alar reduction.

But if the nose is high, firm, and the nostrils are small,

performing an alar reduction makes the nostrils even smaller, and raising it makes it higher and larger,

and reducing it doesn't have much effect. This type of bulbous nose is hard to operate on.

Q: What about people whose nose looks bulbous because the columella is retracted? Are there difficult cases?

Dr. Seo Seung-jo: NO, it is not difficult. Sufficient materials are all that's needed.

Because we just need to fill the retracted columella with materials,

a bulbous nose with a retracted columella actually yields better surgical results.

Q: What is something to be mindful of during bulbous nose surgery?

Dr. Seo Seung-jo: I recommend brief follow-up visits!

Usually, there is no need to visit the clinic frequently after surgery,

but for difficult bulbous nose cases, we have patients come in after one month, two months, and three months.

When getting bulbous nose surgery, rather than saying "Please just make my nasal tip as small as possible,"

creating a beautiful overall line can beautifully correct a bulbous nose.
