pain and scar management after autologous rib cartilage rhinoplasty.😊

What is Autologous Rib Cartilage?

Rib cartilage refers to the costal cartilage located below the ribs in the chest.

Compared to other cartilages used in rhinoplasty (such as ear cartilage),

it has stronger support and durability, making it anatomically possible

to create a stable nasal framework

even in cases where the nose is congenitally weak or lacking tissue.

Autologous Rib Cartilage Harvest Site

The required amount for rhinoplasty

can be harvested through a minimal incision of about 2cm along the inframammary fold (under-breast line),

and generally, the 6th to 10th ribs are most commonly used.

Autologous Rib Pain

​

Autologous rib pain generally refers to the pain around the rib area.

After surgery, movement and mobility may be uncomfortable,

so a recovery period is essential (1 to 2 weeks), and strenuous activities should be avoided.

​

The intensity and specific location of the pain can vary slightly from person to person,

but if persistent pain continues after a certain period, it is most important

to seek consultation from a medical professional.

​

Autologous Rib Scarring

As mentioned above, autologous rib cartilage is harvested through a minimal incision of about 2cm along the inframammary fold.

​

When sutured neatly and properly after harvesting,

severe scarring does not remain, but incorrect suturing can make it highly visible

or uncomfortable.

​

The surgery takes about 2-3 hours, and hospitalization is not required.

Stitch removal is performed twice after surgery (on the 7th and 14th days post-op).

Clinic visits for treatment are required about 2-3 times, and the head surgeon personally checks your progress.

Recovery time varies by individual, but generally, a generous 1-2 weeks are needed after surgery.

Precautions After Autologous Rib Rhinoplasty

📝 What to Prepare

Waterproof tape (band-aids), gauze pads (must be purchased at a pharmacy).

* Because the rib cartilage harvest site is sutured with threads,

these are essential for daily life until the stitches are removed.

📝 Management Method

Showering is possible from the evening of the day after surgery.

​

📝 How to Use Waterproof Tape When Showering

👉 First, remove the gauze applied at our clinic.

👉 Apply a new waterproof band-aid over the wound area. (Make sure water doesn't get in)

👉 After showering, remove the band-aid and dry the wound area.

(The waterproof band-aid must be removed to prevent pigmentation.)

👉 Apply Effexin (eye ointment) to the wound area and then attach a gauze pad.

📝 Wearing Underwear

Also, because wearing regular underwear (bras) can put pressure on the rib cartilage harvest site,

we recommend wearing only sports bras for one month after surgery.
