Hello.
💖your beauty universe! This is Dr. Shim Jung-hwan from Weverse Plastic Surgery :)💖

Today, we will be looking into short nose cases among rhinoplasty procedures.

Q: How many patients visit the clinic with a short nose?
I initially thought that short noses accounted for about 70 to 80 percent of cases, but when I actually looked into it,
it seems to be about an even split between short noses and long noses,
and those with an ideal nose length make up only about 10 percent.

Q: What are the main complaints of patients who come in for a short nose consultation?
They are usually dissatisfied with their nose being small and flat,
and because a short nose often turns upward, resembling a "pig nose," many want a more refined look where their nostrils are less visible!

Q: What is the standard for a short nose?
Nasolabial angle: The angle from the tip of the nose to the philtrum.
An ideal and aesthetically pleasing angle is between 90 and 105 degrees.
If the angle is 110 degrees or more, it can be considered a short nose!

Occasionally, there are patients whose nasolabial angle is less than 90 degrees but the nose still appears upturned.
While there are many cases where the overall length appears short because the bridge between the eyebrows (glabella) is low,
patients typically do not express major dissatisfaction with this specific aspect!

Q: What is the surgical method for a short nose?
Since the nasal tip is upturned, the focus must be on bringing the tip down.
We dissect the alar cartilages at the nasal tip, pull them downward, and secure them in place.
To establish a solid fixation point, a septal extension graft is performed!
A septal extension graft involves transplanting cartilage and securing it to the nasal tip.
If the nasal tip is lowered, the nasolabial angle can sometimes appear sunken when viewed from the side.
Therefore, we simultaneously correct this by pulling out the columellar cartilage or adding ear cartilage to restore the nasolabial angle.
Additionally, as the nasal tip is lengthened, the overall length of the nose increases.
If the bridge between the eyebrows is also raised, the overall length of the nose can become excessively long.

Q: I heard that short nose rhinoplasty is difficult... Is that true?
If the skin is not thick and the cartilage stretches well? 👉 This is the case that will yield the most beautiful results!
If the nasal tip is short, the cartilage doesn't stretch, and the skin is thick? 👉 There are limitations.
Q: Does that mean a 100% improvement might not be possible?
We can either compromise on the height of the nose to ensure the nostrils are hidden,
or raise the height of the nose while leaving it slightly upturned 👉 to achieve a more glamorous look.
It is best to determine the design through thorough consultation with the patient.

Q: When is short nose rhinoplasty recommended?
If you have a bright personality, a long nose might not suit you,
as a short nose tends to complement a cheerful personality better!
However, if you have a mature and calm image but your nose is short, it may clash with your personality.
For these individuals, we highly recommend correcting a short nose!!

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard for a short nose?
Yes, a nose is usually classified as short when the nasolabial angle (the angle from the tip of the nose to the philtrum) is 110 degrees or more. An ideal and beautiful nasolabial angle is 90-105 degrees, and a short nose often appears upturned like a 'pig nose' or has significantly exposed nostrils.
How is short nose surgery performed?
The surgery focuses on lowering the tip of the nose. The alar cartilage at the tip of the nose is dissected and lowered, then cartilage is grafted and fixed through septal extension surgery. At this time, ear cartilage or other tissues may be added to correct the nasolabial angle to prevent it from becoming too acute.
Are there cases where short nose surgery is difficult?
Yes, there may be limitations to surgery depending on the patient's skin and cartilage condition. If the skin is thin and the cartilage is easily stretched, it is easier to achieve beautiful results, but if the skin at the tip of the nose is thick and the cartilage does not stretch well, 100% improvement may be difficult.
If there are surgical limitations, how should the design be approached?
It is best to discuss with the medical staff to determine priorities. The design can be adjusted according to the patient's preferences, such as making the nostrils less visible instead of raising the nose height as much, or conversely, raising the nose while maintaining a slightly upturned, glamorous look.
Who is short nose surgery recommended for?
It is highly recommended for those who have a mature and calm image. If your personality or overall atmosphere is calm but your nose is short and upturned, not matching your image, it is advisable to extend the length of your nose to improve it to a more sophisticated impression.
