Hello~

💎your beauty universe! I am Dr. Seo Seung-jo, head of Weverse Plastic Surgery :)💎

Autologous rib cartilage is the cartilage attached to the front of the ribs.

It is used when a strong supporting implant for the nasal tip is needed,

when all other cartilage has been used up and there is no more available, or when contracture has occurred.

Because rib cartilage naturally has a curved, rounded shape,

it must be carved and refined before use.

However, due to its inherent memory (homeostasis), the cartilage tends to return to its original shape,

which is why many people worry about the 'warping phenomenon.'

Today, let's find out if warping happens often

when performing rhinoplasty using autologous rib cartilage.

Does autologous rib warping happen often?

Many patients worry about the warping (bending) phenomenon,

but in reality, there is no need to worry too much.

This is because during surgery, after cutting the rib cartilage

to the size needed for the nasal tip strut, any warping occurs within 20-30 minutes,

and we only use it after confirming this process.

In the past, autologous rib cartilage was sometimes used

to elevate the nasal bridge.

In those cases, a large piece of rib cartilage (4cm in length x 4-5mm in thickness) was used,

making it impossible to fully verify warping before insertion,

which sometimes led to such side effects.

Therefore, recently, we do not use uncut autologous rib cartilage for the nasal bridge.

Today, we learned about the autologous rib warping phenomenon.

Did this resolve your questions about warping?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the warping phenomenon in autologous costal cartilage rhinoplasty?

The warping phenomenon refers to the bending of cartilage due to the harvested costal cartilage's tendency to return to its original rounded, curved shape. This occurs because of the homeostasis of the rib cartilage, and many people worry about the implant bending during rhinoplasty.

Does the warping phenomenon frequently occur after surgery?

No, you don't need to worry too much. This is because during surgery, after cutting the costal cartilage to the size needed for a nasal tip support, we check for any bending within 20-30 minutes and only select and use cartilage that is in a stable condition.

In what cases is autologous costal cartilage mainly used?

It is mainly used when a strong support material is needed for the nasal tip. Additionally, autologous costal cartilage is usefully employed when ear cartilage or septal cartilage has been fully used in previous surgeries and there is no more cartilage available, or when contracture side effects have occurred in the nose.

Is autologous costal cartilage also used to heighten the nasal bridge?

Recently, large, uncut autologous costal cartilage is not used for heightening the nasal bridge. In the past, large costal cartilage, 4cm long and 4-5mm thick, was used for the nasal bridge, which sometimes led to warping side effects, but currently, this method is avoided to prevent such complications.
