Does Lateral and Lower Canthoplasty Always Close Back Up Over Time?

Hello~!

Your beauty universe! This is Weverse Plastic Surgery :) 💜

We have prepared our 6th Q&A session with Dr. Shim Jung-hwan! ❤

Today's topic is about 'Lateral and Lower Canthoplasty'.

Does lateral and lower canthoplasty always close back up over time?

A: Surgical methods vary depending on the surgeon, but rather than saying it closes back up, it is more accurate to think of it as reverting slightly.

Lateral and lower canthoplasty is performed by anchoring and pulling the lower eyelid to firm tissues (such as the capsulopalpebral fascia, periosteum, etc.)

and extending the remaining skin and mucosal areas.

First, the surgery must be performed delicately so that the extended skin or mucosal areas do not actually fuse back together.

Second, even if these areas do not fuse, the lower eyelid naturally moves as you blink,

so you can expect it to settle into a position that is slightly looser than the initial fixation.

Taking this into account, we intentionally overcorrect during the initial surgery. Because it reverts slightly over time, many people mistakenly think it has closed back up.

Therefore, I would like to say that a certain degree of reversion is normal, but actual tissue fusion is something that should be avoided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the outer corner of my eyes definitely reattach over time after lateral canthoplasty and canthopexy?

No, it will not definitely reattach. The surgery is performed delicately to prevent the skin or mucous membrane from reattaching, so actual tissue adhesion should be avoided and rarely occurs.

After surgery, it feels like the outer corner of my eyes has returned to its original state. Why is that?

This is because the lower eyelid moves when you blink. During this process, the area initially fixed to the firm tissue may loosen slightly and settle, which can make it feel as if it has returned somewhat.

Why is overcorrection performed during lateral canthoplasty and canthopexy?

It is to prepare for the phenomenon where the outer corner of the eye slightly returns over time. By overcorrecting initially, anticipating that the fixation will loosen a bit due to eye movement, a natural result can be achieved later.

How does lateral canthoplasty and canthopexy work?

It is performed by fixing and pulling the lower eyelid to firm tissues such as the orbicularis oculi muscle fascia or periosteum. Afterward, the skin and mucous membrane in the remaining areas are extended to adjust the horizontal length and angle of the outer corner of the eye.
