Hello everyone~
🍒Your beauty universe! This is Dr. Seo Seung-jo from Weverse Plastic Surgery :)🍒

What nose shapes were preferred in the past?
I don't think there was a nose trend 10 years ago.
‘Make it higher, make it a bit high and thick, make my nose thinner.’
There were demands regarding nose thickness and height,
but there were no demands regarding the line.
Then, at some point,
I believe the first popular nose line was the upturned nose.
After that, people started saying that curved lines looked too artificial and contrived,
and photos of ‘Gangnam beauties’ began circulating.

Then, the nose line that really took off was the semi-upward line.
A subtle combination of straight and upturned.
Now, ‘Please make it a semi-upward line’ seems to be
the most common request from patients.
Is the semi-upward nose popular these days?

If you search keywords, I think the semi-upward line is
the most common among nose lines.
But my opinion is a bit different:
I believe the straight nose is more popular than the semi-upward nose right now.
When you ask what kind of nose this is, curved or straight,
I think most of them are straight.
Almost all, whether male or female, have straight noses,
and as I've consistently said before,
a straight nose is the most natural,
the prettiest, and the most in line with current trends.
But isn't a straight nose inherently masculine?
That's right. This is something I always tell my patients:
There's a children's song with lyrics like,
‘The train is long, if it's long it's a banana, a banana is yellow, if it's yellow...’ something like that.
It seems logically correct, but it also seems completely wrong.
How can straightness and masculinity be a one-to-one match?
I don't think curves are exclusively feminine and straight lines are exclusively masculine.

This is from an old video I filmed,
‘Guess the Celebrity by Their Nose’ episode.
If you look at the noses of the celebrities in this video, they all have straight nose lines.
While guessing who they were by their noses,
I don't think there was a single person with a curved nasal bridge.
And now, if you try to think of celebrities with curved noses,
who comes to mind?
Only Min Hyo-rin comes to mind...

Min Hyo-rin's nose seems curved, right? But I don't think it's curved.
Only her nose tip is slightly raised.

What we think of as a curved nose is actually this kind of curved line nose.

But Min Hyo-rin's nose is not like that; her nasal bridge is high, and only the tip is slightly raised.
Overall, her nose length is short, but it's not actually curved.
I actually think the current trend in nose surgery is straight,
it's just that people don't explicitly say ‘straight’.
I believe the trend in nose surgery is indeed straight.
So, where are curved nose lines created?
They are created in the columella.
That's why I think the straight nose for men and the straight nose for women are slightly different.

The most important thing for a nose is its slope.

I've drawn straight lines.
It's just a difference in slope; both are straight.

The left is what is commonly referred to as a masculine-looking straight nose.

However, if you gently soften the nose tip here,
it's still a straight line, but it gives a more feminine impression.

The woman's nose above looks long,
but if it were a bit shorter, it would look much better.
Ultimately, the key is that among straight lines,
a slightly shorter straight line might be the trend.
So, it's a straight line that doesn't make the nose tip too long,
and a more reclined slope seems to be the popular choice.

Karina, Minji from NewJeans, actress Shin Se-kyung,
most celebrities considered to have beautiful noses,
rarely have a curved nasal bridge.

Ultimately, most adjustments involve height and slope,
and then length, to create a straight look.
The difference lies in how to make it look feminine
or how to make it look masculine.
So, when patients bring in photos,
they rarely bring in noses with perfectly curved lines.
Even if they bring a nose with a curved line,
they usually say, ‘Please make it a bit more or less elaborate than this.’
Then, they bring straight noses,
but they absolutely never bring long noses.
The longer the nose, the more masculine it looks when straight,
and it can make the face look longer or older.
Therefore,
a short straight nose with a gentle slope is feminine,
while a nose with a steeper slope, a bit longer, and a slightly higher glabella
gives a masculine impression, but I believe both are essentially straight.
Why are curved noses no longer preferred?
When asked why the nose surgery trend shifted from curved to straight lines,
I think it's about three-dimensionality.

A curved nose
lacks significant three-dimensionality when viewed from the front.
This is because the nasal bridge recedes due to its curvature.
When creating a curved nose line,
the same reason applies to why highlighting doesn't occur well when viewed from the front.
Even if highlighting occurs,
it's inevitably on the glabella and nose tip rather than the nasal bridge.
Since it gives the impression of a high glabella, a low middle nasal bridge, and a high nose tip,
even if the side profile looks pretty,
from the front, it looks long vertically,
and the nose appears slightly longer overall, with the nasal bridge looking sunken.
This is why people are increasingly seeking straight nose lines rather than curved ones.
The more severe the asymmetry, the more a highly curved nose will appear crooked.
Secondly, the higher you raise the nose, the more vulnerable it becomes when curved.
This is due to facial asymmetry.
Because the face isn't symmetrical, creating a curve can
make the nose appear more crooked.
Conversely, people with a drooping nose tip
might not notice asymmetry when their nose tip is drooping,
but some say asymmetry became very noticeable after lifting the nose tip.
Ultimately, everyone's face is slightly asymmetrical,
and when you raise the nose high and create a curve,
asymmetry is bound to become more prominent.
Couldn't an aquiline nose become a trend?
Ultimately, the above question
seems to imply that the person already knows that ‘the trend in nose surgery is not curved’ ^^

An aquiline nose can never be curved.
However, if it's a slight aquiline nose with this kind of feeling, I think that's fine.

Because it's not a matter of having or not having an aquiline nose,
but rather a difference in whether the slope is reclined or upright.

Even if it's the same aquiline nose, no one comes asking for this kind of aquiline nose.

I want to emphasize that the slope is more important in a nose.

If you recline the nose's slope, the face will look more three-dimensional, right?

The nasal bridge line should be straight.
However, it differs depending on how that straight line is shaped.
Sometimes curved noses can look good, but
I want to emphasize that a straight nose has the lowest chance of failure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the semi-upturned nose (jikban-ko) the trending nose shape these days?
The actual trend in nose surgery is closer to a straight nose than a semi-upturned nose. While many patients look for the semi-upturned line, the most versatile and trendy line for both men and women is the straight nose. It gives a sophisticated look by adjusting the angle and length of the nose.
Doesn't a straight nose look too masculine?
No, a straight nose does not necessarily look masculine. The impression changes depending on the length and angle of the nose; if you design a straight line with a shorter length and a gentler slope, you can certainly create a soft and feminine look.
Why is a curved nose line not preferred?
It's because it lacks dimensionality when viewed from the front. If there is a curve in the bridge of the nose, frontal highlighting does not occur well, which can make the nose appear longer and the bridge lower. Additionally, if the nose is raised, there is a risk that facial asymmetry may become more prominent.
How do straight nose lines differ between men and women?
They differ in the length and angle of the nose. The trend for women's straight noses is a relatively shorter length and a more reclined angle, whereas men's straight noses typically feature a slightly higher glabella, a steeper angle, and a slightly longer length.
